How to Winterize Your HVAC System in New Brunswick

When the cold starts creeping in and the leaves are piling up, it’s not just time to pull out the warm clothes — it’s time to make sure your heating system’s ready for the winter ahead. In Fredericton, winters can be rough, and if your HVAC isn’t prepped, you could end up cold and stuck with a repair bill.

I’ve seen what happens when people skip winter prep. So here’s what I always tell homeowners to do before the snow hits.

1. Get a Tune-Up Before It Gets Cold

Before winter really sets in, it’s smart to have a tech come out and check your furnace or heat pump.

A tune-up can catch little problems early, like a burner that’s dirty or an ignitor that’s about to quit. Fixing those now means you won’t be stuck without heat when it’s -20 outside.

2. Change Your Filters

This one’s easy but very important. Dirty filters make your system work harder, which means higher power bills and uneven heat in your house. In New Brunswick, where it gets cold fast, that’s not something you want to take a chance on.

Swap out your filters every month or two during winter. Clean filters also help keep the air in your house fresh, which is nice when the windows are all shut.

3. Shut Down Your AC Properly

If you’ve got central air, it’s time to shut it down for the season. Turn it off at the breaker, clean off any leaves or gunk, and cover it with something that keeps out snow and ice but still lets it breathe.

This keeps rust and critters out and helps your AC last longer.

4. Seal Up Drafts

Your furnace works best when your house holds heat. If you’ve got cold air sneaking in around windows or doors, your system has to work overtime.

Check for drafts and seal them up with weatherstripping or caulk. Insulate the attic if you can. The less heat you lose, the less you’ll pay to stay warm.

5. Check Your Thermostat

Make sure your thermostat’s working right and set to a good winter temp. If you’re still using an old one, think about upgrading to a smart thermostat. They’re great for saving energy — they learn your schedule and adjust the heat without you having to think about it.

Bonus: Watch for Trouble Signs

If your system’s making weird noises, blowing cold air, or turning on and off a lot, don’t wait. That’s usually a sign something’s wrong. Better to fix it now than deal with a breakdown in the middle of a snowstorm.
